Subaru Baja is a lightweight all-wheel drive pickup of mid-size. For the first time the car was introduced by the Japanese Company Subaru on the 18th of July, 2002 at the Auto Show in Detroit.
The exterior design combines a pickup truck, with its small open bodywork compartment at the rear, and SUV. The entire perimeter of the vehicle is installed with plastic covers. Another feature of the design of the body is a partition which is located beyond folding rear seats (separating the cabin from the cargo hold) and can be removed if you need to transport bulky cargo. The manufacturer named this option «Switchback». There are decorative aluminum inserts on the center console and door panel keys, dual-color (matte silver) upholstery, steering wheel and gear lever that are covered with soft leather. Standard equipment of Baja includes such luxury systems as heated front seats, proximity key, a CD player, climate control and tinted glass. Comfortable and ergonomic seats are upholstered with perforated leather. The driver's seat has six levels of adjustment. Rear seats can comfortably accommodate only two adults.
Subaru Baja was offered with two options of petrol four-cylinder engines H4 with volume of 2.5-liter. The base power unit has a capacity of 165 hp, and its turbo version develops power equal to 210 hp. There is a choice of a 5-speed manual transmission or a 4-speed automatic transmission.
Wheelbase of Subaru Baja was 2649 mm, length - 4905 mm, width - 1781 mm, height - 1631 mm. Clearance of the car is only 185mm.
Suspension of Baja was borrowed from Outback, but it was enhanced and subjected to refinements, making it possible to operate the car at a fairly harsh road conditions. It should also be noted that the suspension of Subaru Baja is independent at both front and rear. Cars with an automatic gearbox have a non-standard design of four-wheel drive transmission. Electronically controlled multi-plate clutch is used as a center differential. The control unit regulates the distribution of torque between the axles.
