The Ford Fairmont car was designed and produced exclusively for the North American auto market since 1978 until the 1984. It was then replaced by the more contemporary Ford Tempo in mid 80-s. The compact Fairmont along with the Zephyr model was the first representative of a new Ford Fox platform used in a large array of later models. The most similar to the Fairmont of all the following models were the 1982’s Thunderbird and Granada as well as the 1993’s Mustang. ford Fairmont The initial versions of the car were sold in three different body styles: the two- and four-door sedans and a five-door station wagons. Right at the beginning of its production the line of Fairmont was supplemented by yet another coupe version with a different roofline. It was called Fairmont Futura and was featured with an unusual roof band consistent of two-piece vinyl parts. For its compact size the Fairmont offered plenty of space and room in the salon as well as in the trunk. The Ford Fairmont’s handling and general level of performance was improved with the help of new steering system. Another great advantage of a 1978 Fairmont, despite its spacious interior, was the fuel economy level that was made possible by new lightweight components used in its production. The exterior design was based on two headlights and familiar lines of the previous Maverick model produced in 1970’s. There even was a special police version of the car built in 1978 for several police departments of the country. ford Fairmont The basic engine packages included a 3.3 liter Falcon Six engine and the 2.3 liter OHC engine that were supplemented with a V8 LTD engine in 1980 and a special package that included a 2.3 liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. You could choose between four-speed manual or three-speed manual and automatic transmissions, the most popular of which was the three-speed automatic one. During the years of its production Ford Fairmont faced several periods of remodeling until it was replaced by a completely new, more aerodynamic and light model called Tempo.
