718 RSK was a logical continuation of the model 550A, it is intended specially for races. The letter "К" refers to a ball hinge torsion. The motor had 1500 cm volume and it was located in the central part of the car`s body. But it could be located deeper because of modificated front suspension. The headlights of the car are reveted in a new way.
The First tests showed that this car had a quite good clutch with a pavement and sufficiently high power. The terminal velocity of Porsche 718 was 245 km / h, but the shock absorbers of rear suspension needed the drive repair. Soon all the modernisations were done and in 1958 the RSK was completely ready for races.
During its first participation in Sebring the car finished third and in Le Mans RSK took the third and the forth places.
In 1959 the volume of the car`s engine has been increased from 1.5 to 1.6 l, so the power reached 148 horsepower.
After that 718 RSK took part in Targa Florio race, where it finished first, ahead of the other the porsche cars: 550 RS and two 356Ð carrera.
In the same year in Sebring five RSK cars finished among the first ten. And in 1960 the same access was repeated by the small Porsche 718 in Buenos Aires.
Thereupon the rear suspension was supplied with double wishbones and springs.
In the end of 1962 these cars became unfit for races. The last car of this series,718 GTR, had 8 cylinder engine with volume of 2 l. It brought the last historical win in Targa Florio race. So ended the times of the 718 model in Formula 1.
However, the small 718 was somthing more than just a simple racing car.
The racers 718 took parts in many different competitions, because of them Porsche established a reputation of successful innovative company, attracted the attention of the racing and sports audience and potential buyers to this German racing car brand.
The cars 718 were the leaders of the racing world up to 60s.
It should be noted that the Porsche 718 cars are connected with a big number of legendary racers like Stirling Moss, Jean Bayer, Jo Bonnier, Wolfgang von Trips and Dan Gurney.
Nowadays this model exists only in 33 copies, so it is one of the most beautiful and the rarest Porsche cars in the world.
Currently Porsche 986 Boxster is considered its deserved successor.
