From spring, 2001, the new plant of General Motors do Brasil (GMB) in Brazil began the production of the compact cars Celta.
This B-class car was projected on the shorten platform of the second generation Chevrolet Corsa. Thou, the construction and the design were reworked that the car became cheaper and simpler than the basic version. There were only several scores of modifications for European and American markets.
The Chevrolet Celta had only a 3-door modification. The car was equipped with 1L 8-valve 60 hp power unit, its modification which was working on the alcohol motor fuel. The compression ratio of the alcohol motor was increased from 9.4 to 12.6, so the engine had the capacity of 60 horsepower. More capacity could be reached by the 16-valve variant of the 1 L 68 hp gasoline engine and 1.6 L 8- or 16-valve 92-101 hp. The most efficient models were equipped with 1.7 L swirl-chamber Opel diesel engine with the capacity of 60 hp.
The upgrading of the model was in autumn, 2003. The renewed Chevrolet Celta had got the modern style and the new interior. The reworked basic 1.0 L R4 8V engine could reach the capacity of 70 horsepower.
At the time of 2004 the sales of the new modification Energy with the 1.4 L R4 8V (85 horsepower). The car was equipped with 5-speed manual transmission. The basic package included the immobilizer, the center locking and the protector for the engine compartment. The car had 2 variants: 3- and 5-door hatchback in 3 modifications: Life, Spirit and Super.
The novelty of 2005 year, the Celta Off-Road was equipped with the plastic off-road wind breaker, the relief tires and railings on the roof.
The last years, the Chevrolet Celta was quite popular both in Brazil and other countries. The 2006-year model was equipped the modern lighting, bumpers, had the renewed interior with improved materials of trimming. The engine line remained the same. The car had the 1.0 L 70 hp R4 8V or 1.4 L 85 hp R4 8V power units in combination with the 5-speed manual transmission.
In 2012 General Motors announced the new Chevrolet Onix will be a successor of the Chevrolet Celta.
