Pontus Tidemand has become one of the sensations of the Sweden stage of the World Championship
This 22-year-old racer impressed both the fans and those who took part in the race.
This young Swede debuted on track, piloting A WRC-car. He showed a great result in qualifications and occupied the fourth position for some time. The second day of competitions wasn’t as successful: one of the engines let him down. But the racer was noticed. When the racing came to an end, the British Autosport magazine published the article, describing a short but a very successful story of this young Swede. That is what they have written:
It is not so easy to share one house with Henning Solberg, especially when he is your stepfather. It is not because he has been a Champion of Norway five times and is a current member of one of the most famous sport families in the country. Henning is a real mad man – in a positive sense of word.
When behind the wheel, he always tries to do his best. This feature is also shared by his stepson – Pontus Tidemand.
The position, taken by the Sweden team in the history of rallies is solid. In this country the first rally champion was born – Bjorn Valdegard and mister Blomkvist, too.
Despite the great history of the Sweden team, its future is not so definite. Per-Gunnar Anderson served well as he won the Title of a champion in J-WRC twice. But he lost his chance to win a more prestigious reward.
And Tidemand brings new hope for Sweden.
His career began in the year 2008 when he became of age. He took part in Norwegian Romjulsrally during a break between Christmas and New Year. Despite the fact that he had never taken part in competitions, Pontus piloted his Subaru Impreza and finally took the sixth place.
The next two years were spent in Norway until he got a chance to show his potential. Tidemand signed a contract with Even Rally Company. Then he took part in the Sweden Championship, competing with Toyota’s Matson Johnson.
Pontus outperformed Johnson: he took the first and second places at each stage of the Championship.
Last year, supported by Even Rally, Pontus debuted in the World Championship, spending his first season in WRC Academy. This talented pilot was noticed immediately, as he was added to the list of the young pilots of FIA Academy.
Tidemand finished last year at the third place and he didn’t manage to beat Elfin Evans. He became the leader and Pontus couldn’t even at least reach the result of the winner.
Tidemand said that last year wasn’t very successful, but he hopes for better results for the future championships. Even the director of Qatar M-Sport WRT Malcolm Wilson was rather impressed by the performance of the young Swede. But Henning Soderberg was even more surprised. The moment Pontus heard this from his stepfather, he reacted immediately. “That is why I am the fastest: I live together with this man!”
