GM and Honda have formed an alliance in hydrogen area

GM’s Vice Chairman, Steve Hirskyy and Honda North America President, Tetsuo Iwamura, have announced about an agreement on July 2. General Motors and Honda have announced about a long-term agreement to jointly develop next-generation of fuel cell and hydrogen storage technologies in order to make this technology commercially viable and mass implemented by the year of 2020. The partners intend to share their experience in this field and to benefit from such collaboration. GM and Honda are the leaders in developments in the field of automotive fuel cells: from 2002 to 2012 they have sold more than 1,200 patent applications together.

The prototype of Chevrolet Sequel had showed few years ago how to pass on one hydrogen filling over 480 km of road. The cylinders under crossover’s floor contain 8 kg of compressed hydrogen with 700 atmospheres pressure.

General Motors also has a long history of developing fuel cell vehicles, the first experiences with them started almost in 1964. During that time, Company had built a few concepts and experimental hydrogen sedans and crossovers prototypes, some of them were made in more than 100 copies. The total amount of test that had been performed can be counted with 5 million kilometers. Honda, on the other hand, has something to be proud of, as it was the first Company that brought to light the fuel cell unit (FCX Clarity) and started renting it to the US, Japan and Europe to places where hydrogen stations were present.

The possibility of Honda FCX Clarity becoming a serial car is conditional. From the very beginning Japanese manufacturers have stated that they intend to assembly only about 200 of these vehicles, most of which will go to California. The power reserve of this car is 386 km, for which 3.92 kg of compressed hydrogen is injected into its cylinders. By the way, before the release of FCX Clarity, Company had built up a very small hatch on fuel cells, called FCX. Since 2002, as part of full-scale test of the hydrogen technology in the United States and Japan, consumers received 85 cars and models FCX FCX Clarity.
