Production of the first car started in 1974. In the U.S. and Canada it was sold under the trade mark «Volkswagen Rabbit», and in Latin America - «Volkswagen Caribe». Design of the first generation was created by Italian automobile designer Giorgetto Giugiaro. Except standard body of hatchback, Rabbit was also produced as a convertible (from 1980 to 1993). GTI version of the car had appeared in 1976, and the international magazine «Sports Car International» awarded it with a 3rd position among the the best cars of 1980\'s.
In 2008 Rabbit has become more powerful: 4-cylinder engine with volume of 2.5 liter was upgraded and added with 20 \"horses\".
External shape differs with restraint and conservatism, the car is deprived of eccentric traits. The interior is not brilliant, but it has a good quality. Large instruments are understandable and well-read. The car can accommodate four people and some luggage. You can adjust seats manually.
Engine is paired with a 5-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission. The engine runs smoothly and does not burden with noises, except \"sound effects\" after four thousand rev / min. The car has enough power for everyday driving and the engine can deliver no less fun than comparable engines of Dodge Caliber, Toytota Matrix and Subaru Impreza. Average fuel consumption is about 10.5 liters per 100 km.
Steering is clear and almost athletic and clutch is excellent. Due to this the car feels confident even at high speed. Pedals are arranged next to each other, which is convenient. Standard equipment includes ESP.
Comfortline package is available as an option. It includes an additional set of 16 inches wheels and a CD player for 6 CDs. A sliding sunroof and satellite radio are also available. There is also a \"winter package\", which includes heated seats and windshield washers. The disadvantage of Rabbit is absence of AWD.
Reliability, quality of design and assembly, manageability and driving pleasure, roominess are the main advantages of Volkswagen Rabbit.
