The Volkswagen Golf is a small size car manufactured by German giant Volkswagen from 1974 and seven generations of Golfs have been marked across the globe in different body styles and names. In the US it was marked as the Volkswagen Rabbit, in Canada as Mk1 and Mk5 and in Mexico as Volkswagen Caribe. The Mk1 was originally introduced as a front wheel front engine car to replace the Volkswagen Beetle which was rear engine, rear wheel driven and air cooled. The model has been rated as the bestselling car for Volkswagen in its history and a reported 29 million units were built till 2012 and was the second bestseller model for the world.

 

The initial production of the Volkswagen Golf has been 3-door hatchback versions. Other models included estate/wagon, 6-door hatch back, convertible, notchback golf derived, sedan/saloon which filled the market in various nameplates like the Volkswgen Jetta, Vento and Bora. The Golf models catered to all segments of the automobile market whether it is a personal car with basic spec or a high performance hatch. Thought out its history the Volkswagen Golf has won several awards and that included the “2009 World Car of the Year” for the Mk6 and the 2013 award for the Golf Mk7. It has also made the “10 Best” list of “Car and Driver” several times.
