Bentley wants to do the old practice of Coachbuilding for affluent customers
Bentley wants to do the old practice of Coachbuilding for affluent customers

It was a practice earlier for customers to buy a car chassis from automobile manufacturers such as Bentley and they get its body assembled at a coachbuilder in a way they want to customize. It was highly prevalent practice earlier with Bentley but much water has flown under the bridge now and industry has progressed with unibody construction and tighter regulation making the old practice no longer a viable one. Surprisingly Bentley wants to go back and do it again.

Kevin Rose, Sales Chief, Bentley was talking to UK trade publications and shown that BMW is planning to set up a special division to cater to very affluent customers who demands customized coach construction for their automobiles.  This trend has already emerged and we have witnessed the McLaren Special Operations’ outlandish X-1 and Ferrari’s one off special projects such as the F12TRS and SP12E. Bentley also wants to have the share of action.

This is not a first to reconstruct the contemporary Bentlry body in recent years, the Flying Star offered by Carrozeria Touring Superleggera has turned a shooting brake of the Continental GT and Dany Bahar is planning to do the same at his Ares outfit. By making it in-house Bentley would be able to pick up the car chassis when it is the right time and offer necessary factory backing and support.
