A Honda has been spotted testing by spy photographers and what was it? Probably it is the long overdue replacement of the Pilot crossover which is in its last legs. The sheet metal is covered by camouflage generously hence could not make much out of but it appeared ready for production inclusive of the Honda badge.
What is the significance? The present Pilot has been more or less remained the same since its induction in 2009 and the only update was in 2012 when Honda removed the bizarre “cyborg” grille from the SUV.
Six years ago Honda had a head start in the SUV segment and sped away literally from its competitors having three row crossovers. The body on frame truck modeled format is passé now and almost all of them have abandoned it and opted for the carlike crossover bodies and lighter. Honda’s image is fading now from the market and to further aggravate the situation the latest comparison test has placed Honda in the last place.
For Honda, there is an urgent need now to re-establish its brand as the “go for it” crossover midsize three-row SUV in the segment. In the previous years, Acura’s MDX luxury crossover used to be the model with whom the Pilot used to share its platform and the standard profile of the test car indicates that it will be the same for this one too!
