In the name of “safety” Feds killed an imported Mini Cooper on Thursday. The deed was done at a public display by US Customs and Border Protection forces in New Jersey and the excuse was that the 2000 Mini Cooper was imported in to the country illegally.
The vehicle was found to be carrying a fraudulent 1988 VIN and was too new to be imported under the 25 or more year old laws of the country. The “offending” vehicle was apprehended from the owner and was put to its death by crushing before the press, as reported by Associated Press to “highlight safety standards”.
This is pure bullshit, the vehicle and its owners are just another being victimized by the draconian, and crony laws in their shameful history which essentially bans vehicles being imported from foreign countries. This blasphemy should end. Associated Press reports that this exercise is the part of the pact between the US Customs and their UK counterparts to trace illegally imported vehicles and punish their owners for the act.
In a similar exercise in Summer 40 Land Rovers were seized by the Homeland Security officials across the country and this one we reported exclusively happened way back in May 2013. These are the latest happening in an oft repeated stories where a car enthusiast from the US aspires for a car model which was never permitted to be sold in the country’s shores.
On a broader note all the stories are very similar. An importer bring in desirable vehicles not permitted in the US swearing that the laws governing the import has been mastered and also the paperwork required for the purpose. Enthusiastic buyers fall for these forbidden fruits and along the line the real story unravel to show that they have been swindled out of their self esteem when a Federal Agents rings the bell at their door.
