There were backslaps in tons at the 2015 Detroit Show for Lexus’ press conference and exclamations like “Hey, new GS F is here” are heard. This is all about the new small engine which is going to play big in the luxury brand of Toyota. The carmaker is planning to introduce the engine a 2.0 Liter turbo inducted in the NX200t to other models from the current year. This move is expected to bring the Lexus brand to close to the European rivals whose engines Lexus is competing with.
BMM to Audi to Lincoln to Mercedes, every automaker in the world utilizes their turbo four-cylinder engines in their line-up thus it makes good sense that the Toyota luxury brand also projects its V-6 powered main engine into the mainstream for the coming years. Lexus spokesperson would not divulge which models are going to be offered the turbo engine but said that it would be replacing the V-6 2.5 Liter in a variety of its models worldwide. For the US, we can deem that the 2.5 Liter six-cylinder with 204 hp, the only option offered with the IS250 will be using the most potent turbo making 235hp and inducted in the 2015 NX200t.
We were also briefed that any Lexus model which currently uses a displacement less than a 3.0 could be replaced with the turbo four-cylinder powerplant. It will not exactly replace it but just increase the power. On this, we did not receive further details. But we can safely conclude that this turbo would make its way into the ES sedan and even the bigger GS in the US market to gain fuel efficiency.
It is certainly sufficient power at 235hp for the ES considering the 220 horses used by the ES300h hybrid, and also the competitors Audi A6, Caddy CTS, BMW 5-series use turbo-fours producing from 200hp to 240hp in their basic models.
