Since the induction of the automatic transmission entrusted by the German automakers, the engineers were busy adding more gears and shift timings with vengeance. The whole exercise looks like a mission to completely wipe out the manual stick from the automobile range.
The Golf lost the manual gearbox when it was last introduced in 2009 and from there onwards it was the dual clutch as a standard feature for the model. It also seems that the prayers from the “save the manuals” has reached the carmaker’s ears. The Golf GTI being offered with the manual box also gives a reason to have a close look at the model. The latest model has been given a fresh facelift and also a new engine. The old 1.4 Liter turbo has been eliminated in place we have a 1.8 Liter making 192hp in place of 180hp. The old machine provided the Roots blow which enhanced the torque, but the latest with enhanced hp aptly compensate that. The engine provides 184lb of thrust with the seven-speed automatic transmission but with the manual slush box of six gears the torque rises appreciably at 236 lb-ft. With the manual gearbox, it recorded 6.7 seconds for the 0-62 which makes it less than 0.2 seconds of the earlier model and the car also achieved a top speed of 147mph. The automatic transmission with dual clutch also offers the same figures, but it beat the manual over the mileage at 3mpg more.
The manual is still loved because you feel the increased torque with it though you don’t see it in the 0-62mph timing. The little car also has very little body roll and the chassis is faultless when combined with the latest engine. With appreciable driveability and control, the vehicle is well behaved but we wish that more passion has been pumped into it by VW.
