One of the leading suppliers of the car manufacturing industry, the German Continental Company, has invented a technology that will allow the drivers to forget about the usual car keys. This invention consists of a special application installed in your smartphone that contains a digital signature. Not only this application helps you activate the door locks and ignition of your car, it will also give you the opportunity to order the car from the hire services and pay for the recharge of the vehicle. The last option is especially useful for the car-sharing companies that use electric cars, for example the French Autolib company.
Along with EVTRONIC, Veolia, Proxiway and Mercur, Continental Company has recently started the testing process of this new application. The final goal of this project is to create a rental service that will let the small companies and organizations lend their cars to people. The system users will get the opportunity to book the nearest charging station or a vehicle using their smartphone. The application offers its users all the information they might need: rental station, a key from the car, the place on the charging station.
The application shares the information with the car by Near Field Communication (NFC) technology.
The signature that is saved on the SIM-card has an authorization key for the selected vehicle. This key is sent to the operator every time you want to use the car. The NFC lets the phone send the information to the NFC Reader that is installed on the front window of the car. The NFC Reader receives the signal and authorizes you to perform actions with the car, for example open the door or start the engine.
The main priority of this digital key is its convenience and simplicity. There’s no need to have a key, you just need to have a smartphone that will give you the access to the car you rented any time you want and need it. And since the phone is something you will never leave your home without, the problem of losing your keys may be solved forever.
