Lamborghini’s project Urus has finally received a “green light” and even has an official date for production start, which would be the year of 2017. Such great news was brought to us by Harry Metcalfe, the chief editor of Evo magazine. Harry Metcalfe managed to talk to the official representatives of Italian car manufacturer during the presentation of Egoista concept that happened not that long ago.
According to Harry, and the news is published on his Twitter account, the fundamental decision is made and there’s no turning back. Well, after all this concept had to relive, this is really great news. Urus has to become not only the first crossover produced by Lamborghini, but also the first Lamborghini for everyday driving in the modern history of such vehicles, according to the statement of Stephan Winkelmann that was made during the concept’s premiere at the Beijing Auto Show 2012.
The transformation of Urus concept into a serial crossover means it will get a new platform, most definitely an MQB one that was also used for production of Audi Q7, Porsche Cayenne and Volkswagen Touareg.
A hybrid power plant with 584 hp of capacity is also something serial Urus will be equipped with. And the most interesting thing about this car is that its price will be very democratic, starting with $150.000 and ending with $200.000 if the estimated calculations are correct.
Urus will become a global product, but, of course, with a luxury feel to it. The main markets are expected to be China, USA and Middle East. Not that this car won’t be available anywhere else, it’s just that these markets are a priority for Lamborghini’s management. The Urus name, for example, is already patented in China, so that local enterprises don’t spoil Lamborghini’s new work.
And we’ll just have to wait for 2017 and hope that no crisis will force the Italian manufacturers to change their plans again as it already happened a couple of times. Good thing there’s only four years to go; bad thing is that that’s a long time.
