In 1995 Renault 19 was replaced by the model Megane. Initially, the car was offered only in two body styles: five-door hatchback and 3-door fastback coupe called the Coach. The two variants significantly differed in design of the rear lights and with round lenses of the coupe and an ellipsoidal of the hatchback. Capacity of the luggage compartment of hatchback ranged from 350 to 1210 liters with the rear seat folded out, while the coupe had only 290 liters. But front seats of the coupe were equipped with lateral support. The driver can adjust the seat, not only in length and angle of inclination of the back, but also in height.
The range of engines was introduced with 1.6 l/75 hp, 1.6 l/90 hp, 2.0 l/114 hp, 2.0 liter, 16-valve / 150 hp, diesel 1.9 l/64 hp turbo diesel 1.9 l/95 hp. The last one was replaced by the newest DTi turbo diesel engine with direct-injection and capacity of 98 hp. In addition to conventional manual 5-supenchatoy transmission there was 4-band automatic transmission with electronic control.
In 1996, the manufacturer has presented convertible that was based on the coupe.
A four-door sedan appeared in January 1997. Its dimensions were the following: length 4400 mm, height 1420 mm and load capacity from 510 to 1310 liters.
The first generation of Megane was a great success. The car was in demand, and in 1997 it even won the title of \"most popular car in Europe.\"
In 1998, the Megane family of cars was updated. Body has become even more streamlined, due to the soft and smooth lines. The design turned expressive and dynamic. The newly designed interior was set with the most modern equipment.
In 1999, the Megane family was added with another version of wagon which was produced in Turkey.
There are three trim levels of Renault Megane - PTE, PXE and PXT. They differ in the number of installed equipment and interior trim.
In autumn 2002, at the auto show in Paris, Renault introduced Megane II that was car with a strong personality and a futuristic design.
During its long history Renault Megane was changed, perfected and replenished, but still it remained very popular.
