Ford Motor Co didn’t even try to adapt the existing model for Indian market, it has created a fully new car for the special native conditions. This car was called Ford Ikon. The specialists of German and British divisions of Ford constructed it working together. The debut of the car was in January 2000.

The platform was borrowed for the Ford Fiesta, the wheelbase was longed for 40 mm. The Ford Ikon was 4140 mm long, 1635 mm wide and 1380 mm high. While constructing the cabin, it was taken into consideration the native tradition of wearing the turban, so it was made the higher roof. The doorways were framed with the smooth plastic elements for the comfortable entrance of the women in their saris. The doorways were made higher, too. The air conditioner of the increased capacity was in the standard package. The interior of the car was similar to the Fiesta’s. The Ford Ikon had the east-west mounting of the engine and the FWD. The engine line consisted of 1.6 L Zetec-Rocam one-shaft gasoline power unit (with the low compression ratio for the native type of patrol) with the capacity of 92 hp and the naturally aspirated diesel with the volume of 1.8 L and the capacity of 58 hp. The torque curve of the engine and transmission type were chosen according to the manner of driving of Indian people. The native conditions also influenced on the other components. Thus, the rigidity of the cabin on the torsion was increased. The brakes system was modernized, it was strengthen the suspension. By 2001, it was produced 15870 copies of the car. In spite of size of the Ford Ikon, due to the semi-independent rear suspension, this model had the large trunk with the volume of 400 L.

Depending on the version, the Ford Ikon had the steering booster, the audio system with the CD player, central locking system, the laminated glasses, cast wheels etc. Ford India exports this car on the markets of South Africa and Latin America; some components were sold in China. Ford managed to create a good model judging by the outside look and the technical characteristics of the car.
