Swedish auto manufacturers are looking for a partner to create a smaller Volvo copy
Lex Kersemeykers, the head of Volvo\'s Product Planning Department, has clarified some moments related to the potential B-series model line increasing. There are no specific plans or timing in creating this car, the great thing is that this project itself is a possibility. As Volvo engineers say, to make this project a reality you need to make two things possible. First one is finding a partner to develop a new or remake an existing platform for this subcompact car. Second thing is adapting a hybrid or electric engine for such platform; otherwise the entire project is senseless.
For those of our readers who don’t know, the newest SPA platform used by many companies is built for medium or big vehicles, beginning with S60 sedan’s replacement and ending with new XC90 crossover that will be presented by the end of 2014. The last one, by the way, will also be equipped with hybrid power plant. The reason of this engine being the only option of XC90 is the unexpected success of V60 Plug-in Hybrid electric car.
The Company was planning to sell 5.000 vehicles in the first year but the number of vehicles sold only in Netherlands has exceeded a 3.000 point.
The increasing sales of this model in Europe are very encouraging, making the Company count on almost 10.000 of sold vehicles in the first year. That’s why Volvo is planning to increase the production and make it really fast. Such high interest to Volvo’s plug-in hybrids lets the Company’ s management hope for same success of a similar, but smaller electric power plants for compact vehicles.
The most compact Volvo car will appear only in case a nature-friendly power plant will be designed specifically for it. There’s a tendency to reduce fuel consumption and introduce hybrid and electric systems as a replacement in the segment of compact and subcompact cars. So the appearance of Volvo’s subcompact electric, or better hybrid vehicles is not even a question. The question is how long will it take for such vehicle to become available in the Volvo’s official Auto Salon? Let’s wait and see.
